Arrived in India in 1915 and was on Military duty from 1916-19; served in the Indian Political Service from 1919-38 ; appointed Governor of Central Provinces and Berar, 1938-40 ; Political Adviser to the Crown Representative, 1940-41 and 1943-45 ; Governor of the United Provinces, 1945-47. British Government Director of Suez Canal Company 1948.
