    Service Particulars Joined Indian Police Service in 1949 and posted to the erstwhile Hyderabad state and after the reorganization of states, allotted to Andhra Pradesh.

    Served as Superintendent of Police in the District of Nizamabad, Raichur and Guntur and as Dy. Commissioner of Police in the twin city of Hyderabad and Secunderabad from 1955 to 1962.

    Joined Intelligence Bureau in 1962 as Assistant Director.  As I.B. Officer served in Sikkim and Bhutan during 1963 - 1967 as OSD and Adviser respectively.

    Served as Deputy Director and Joint Director in I.B. Head Quarter from 1967 to 1980.

    Promoted as Director, Intelligence Bureau in February 1980 and held the post till August 1983.

    Served  as Lt. Governor, Arunachal Pradesh from August 1983 to November 1985, the first  I.P. / I.P.S. Officer to be appointed to a Constitutional post.

    Served  as Governor of Sikkim from November 1985 to March 1989.

    Served  as Governor of West Bengal from March 1989 to February 1990. Governor of Uttar Pradesh from 8th July, 2004 till 28th July 2009.
